Proper mechanical ventilation is critical to the health and wellbeing of building occupants as it can significantly impact the quality of inhaled air, dissipation of odours and general thermal comfort levels. Incorrect ventilation flows can therefore pose risks to maintaining required internal temperatures and humidity levels, sustaining continuous removal of pollutants such as particulate matter and carbon dioxide and mitigating negative health issues such as allergies, fatigue and respiratory illnesses.
To assess the performance of mechanical ventilation systems, supply and extraction air flow rates need to be measured in volume-per-time-period units (usually Litres/Second) or possibly analysed with the volume of the room they service to understand the number of Air Changes Per Hour. These figures can then be compared to either the contractual requirements and/or the original design specifications to ascertain if the system is currently performing as required.
